Brooklyn International High School
I owe my nearly all of my development as an educator to working in a truly excellent school with colleagues who are masters of their craft. Brooklyn International's model for constructivist learning, which includes regular language development tasks in all subject areas, students working in heterogeneous groups, frequent interdisciplinary connections, multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate knowledge, and a focus on social development has been remarkably successful. Our graduation and college attendance rates, as well as scores on the State English exam are above the city average for native English speakers, and far above the average for ESL students. The model upon which our school was developed is now used in 19 schools around the country. Most importantly, ours is a school at which students with many barriers to success are thriving in and beyond high school.
